eBay Changing Prices…Again?

eBay’s changing their pricing again. This comes a few months after their “first 5 listings free”–you’ll pay no Insertion Fees whenever you list Auction-style and start pricing under $1!” promotion, which I’d say got people to start listing their items more.

Starting March 30, 2010 selling on eBay will be a better deal than ever!

  • List Auction-style FREE–no Insertion Fees–when you start your Auction-style listing under $1.
  • Get new, lower Insertion Fees for all other start prices.
  • Either way, pay one easy Final Value Fee of 9% of the winning bid (but never more than $50)-and pay only if your item sells.
  • List in Fixed Price for 50¢, with Final Value Fees for the most part staying the same.

This new standard fee structure will replace the current “first 5 listings free”–you’ll pay no Insertion Fees whenever you list Auction-style and start pricing under $1!*

With the new model, it’s almost certain that we’ll start seeing a lot more $0.99 auctions. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing for eBay, because a majority of their income comes from the final value price, which is the price that the item sells for. What this new price model does is to get more people into eBay’s system, and ideally close more sales, bringing even more income for eBay.

The changing ecommerce landscape and new competitors to the auction scene, with big names such as Amazon, and other auction sites like Bonanzle, will definitely be forcing eBay to continually look for new ways to innovate and promote their services.

Already in the last few months, eBay has changed their site design, their listing format, their prices, and their feedback system. It’s too early to say anything now, but it’ll definitely be interesting to watch how eBay innovates and adapts.
