How to Create Domain Alias

Your website is your home on the internet, and your domain name is your address. Creating a Domain Alias is like giving people other ways to get to your address.

Read further to learn more about Domain Aliases and how to create one in your cPanel.

Note: This guide is only applicable to users who have web hosting plans with Vodien. If your website is hosted elsewhere, you will need to contact your web hosting provider to create a Domain Alias.

What Is a Domain Alias

Domain Alias, previously known as Parked Domain, is a domain that does not have its own website but routes to an active website that is connected to your main domain name.

For example, you have a website that’s connected to mymaindomain.com, and you also own mydomainname.net and mydomainname.org; which do no have active websites. You can redirect the extra domains to your main domain’s website with the Domain Alias feature in your cPanel. By doing this, you redirected all the traffic to your main domain’s website while only maintaining one website.

Other uses for a Domain Alias include:

  • Securing your brand
By registering your brand’s domain name in different TLDs, you are reserving the right to own all of them so no other person or entity can own it, protecting you from fraudulent activities.

  • Localising your brand
You can have mydomainname.com.au, mydomainname.sg, mydomainname.uk, and so on, to target different locales without having to build different websites for each.

  • Maximising website traffic
If typos are a common issue for your main domain, you can register the typo versions and even shortened versions of your domain to route all the traffic back to your main domain’s website. A good example is facebook.com, where both facebok.com (a common typo) and fb.com (its shortened version) route back to the same website.
