Domain Name Status
All domain names have different status and there are (2) two types of status codes: client and server. The difference is that client status is set by the Registrars, like Vodien, while server status is set by the domain’s governing Registry.
In this article, you will find out the different status that you will encounter and what they mean.
Client Status Set by Domain Registrars
There are Registrars that automatically add certain codes when you register a domain name. All of which can be enabled or disabled per request.
| Status Code | Definition |
|---|---|
| clientDeleteProhibited | This status prevents the domain from being deleted, protecting against unauthorized deletion due to fraud or hijacking. To delete the domain, contact your registrar to remove this restriction. |
| clientHold | The domain is removed from the DNS and will not resolve. This is typically set for legal, payment, or deletion-related reasons. |
| clientRenewProhibited | This status blocks renewal requests. Commonly used during disputes or when the domain is pending deletion. |
| clientTransferProhibited | Prevents the domain from being transferred to another registrar. Used to protect against unauthorized transfers. Contact your registrar to lift this status if you wish to transfer. |
| clientUpdateProhibited | Prevents any updates to domain information. Typically enabled to avoid unauthorized changes. Contact your registrar to remove this status if needed. |
Server Status – Set by Domain Registries
These status codes are enforced by the Registry and override any client-level status.
| Status Code | Definition |
|---|---|
| addPeriod | A temporary status applied during the first few days after domain registration. No action is needed. |
| autoRenewPeriod | Set after the domain is automatically renewed. If you don't wish to keep it, contact your registrar for cancellation options. |
| inactive | Indicates that no name servers are assigned. The domain is not active in DNS and will not resolve. |
| ok | The domain is active and has no restrictions or pending operations. |
| pendingCreate | A request to create the domain has been received and is being processed. |
| pendingDelete | The domain was not restored within the 30-day redemption period and is now awaiting deletion. It will soon be removed from the registry and become available for re-registration. |
| pendingRenew | A request to renew the domain has been submitted and is in process. |
| pendingRestore | The registrar has requested to restore the domain from redemption. The registry is waiting for required documentation. If not provided in time, the domain returns to redemption status. |
| pendingTransfer | A domain transfer to another registrar has been requested and is being processed. |
| pendingUpdate | A request to update the domain is currently being processed. |
| redemptionPeriod | The domain was deleted and is now in a 30-day redemption window. After this period, it will be permanently deleted and can be re-registered. |
| renewPeriod | A grace period after the domain has been renewed. If deleted during this time, a refund may be issued to the registrar. |
| serverDeleteProhibited | Prevents deletion of the domain. Typically applied during disputes or at the request of the domain owner. |
| serverHold | The registry has removed the domain from DNS. The domain will not resolve until the status is cleared. |
| serverRenewProhibited | Prevents renewal of the domain. Often applied during disputes or before deletion. |
| serverTransferProhibited | Prevents the domain from being transferred. Typically used during disputes or by request. |
| serverUpdateProhibited | Prevents changes to domain settings. Commonly applied during legal disputes or when the domain is in redemption. |
| transferPeriod | A brief period after a successful transfer. If deleted during this time, the registrar may receive a refund. |
