Interestingly, Microsoft Bing is using Akamai, which provides CDN services that runs on Linux (See live link). Ironic? Maybe. It's really a case of business (choosing the best CDN provider) versus choosing to support their own in-house technology (Windows).
In this case, it just so happens that Bing as a search engine absolutely has to have a solid network, otherwise they'll fail to compete effectively. The best case for Microsoft would be to choose a CDN provider that supports Windows, but it probably is because there's currently none that matches the size of Akamai. Hence, the forced irony.
In our experience as a web hosting provider, 80%-90% of customers will be extremely happy with unix-based hosting. It's also cheaper at the start because the OS comes without the licensing model that Microsoft has. This is probably part of the reason why the LAMP stack has become so popular. However, we still have several enterprise companies that require Windows servers because of specialised applications that run on them, or because they have specific domain experience in Windows, and prefer sticking to Windows.
A common question we've received is: "I'm running Windows on my personal computer, will there be a problem with choosing and working with Unix web hosting?"
The answer is there's absolutely no problems. Any system can communicate with our unix-based web hosting plans, whether you're running Mac OS, Windows, or any other OS, but that's not all. We've invested in a professionally created, user-friendly, web-based Graphical User Interface that allows you to manage your web hosting plan. This means you'll never be needed to type in cryptic Unix commands or even see the command line, and still be able to manage your web hosting account fully.
