Why You Should Submit Your Site to Search Engines and How to Do It

When your website goes live, it doesn’t automatically mean that you’ll see it on the search engine results pages (SERPs) right away. This scenario is a common problem among website owners who are just starting to establish their web presence.

But to be able to understand why, you have to determine how search engines work first. Basically, what happens is that search engines work through crawling and indexing. These make sure that your website shows up on SERPs whenever a user enters a keyword in the search bar.

Crawling and indexing are performed automatically by search engines, but this process takes time. If you want your website to be available on search engines immediately, the smartest thing to do is to put up your website for a manual search submission.

Reasons Why You Should Manually Submit Your Website

Pace

There’s no way of knowing when the search engines will locate your website. It may take weeks or months even. For the time being, you won’t be able to generate sales from your website. So, it’s wise to submit your website manually to save time and resources.

Assurance

The search engines will index all your website information as they see fit. Key changes in layout, design, structure, or content will be overlooked if you leave your website to be discovered by search engines. Whereas if you manually submit your website, you can choose the pages that you want the search engines to prioritise.

Improvement

You will be directed to a Management Dashboard once you submit your website to search engines for consideration. A handful of tools will be made available to you that will help you test your web page and spot possible problems. Moreover, the Dashboard also allow you to make updates to your content and inform the search engine that it needs to be crawled again.

How to Submit Your Website to Google

How to Submit Your Website to Google

Before July 2018, Google allowed direct URL submissions to its search engine. Since then, submissions can only be made through Google Search Console

Here is how to submit your website to Google:

  1. Find your Sitemap. It is an XML file that lists all your website pages. Find your sitemap at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. As an alternative, you can use yourdomain.com/robots.txt.
  2. Once you’ve located your sitemap, go to Google Search Console and click on Select your property.
  3. Select Sitemaps and paste your sitemap in the URL box.
  4. Click the Submit button.

If you want to submit a single page of your website only, paste the URL of that page in Console’s URL inspection tool.

This is also where you can find out whether Google has indexed your page or not.

  • You will see URL is on Google if your page has been indexed.
  • You will see URL is not on Google if your page has not been indexed.

If your page has not been indexed, click Request indexing to start the process.

Yahoo is powered by the same indexes that run Bing. So, if you have accomplished the steps above in submitting your website to Bing, then your website is automatically submitted to Yahoo as well. On other hand, if you want to be sure, head on to Yahoo after your submission and look for your web address. If your website shows up, then it has been crawled, indexed, and ranked.

Otherwise, you can push the search engine to crawl through your website.

E-commerce websites have become a convenient alternative for brick-and-mortar stores.
