Today, the 9th of August, Singaporeans celebrate 57 glorious years of independence, and we at Vodien celebrate with them.

The theme for NDP 2022 recognises the importance of family, friends, and the community in helping every Singaporean overcome challenges and move forward towards a better future. This spirit is encapsulated in the word 'Majulah', which means 'onward'.  

This year has seen countries across the world try to revert back to pre-pandemic functioning. This is why the word 'Majulah' holds special significance, not just for the people of Singapore, but for all mankind. 

There’s no doubt that COVID-19 took a toll on everybody in some form or another, but it also brought families and friends closer together in many ways. 

The theme calls on Singaporeans to have faith in their abilities and their fellow citizens, meet challenges head-on, and look forward to a bright future while leaving the gloomy days of the pandemic behind. 

So, how old is Singapore in 2022? The intricately designed logo answers that question. 

The two figures appear to be holding hands to indicate the importance of unity among the people of Singapore. But if you look closely, you will see that the figures also outline the number 57, which is the number of years Singapore has been celebrating its independence.  

In the days leading up to today, Singaporeans enjoy carnivals across the country, as well as fun activities and performances for people of all ages.  

Today, spectacular fireworks light up the sky after a flypast by the Republic of Singapore Air Force. 

Don Richmond, Taufik Batisah, and The Island Voices collaborated for this year's National Day theme song, titled Stronger Together. The song calls on everyone to "rise stronger together" towards a bright future.
