How To Update Joomla Version

When you are using Joomla, you will see a note saying “Joomla [version] is available. Update Now!” which allows you to update your CMS to its most recent version. However, you need to take note of the following precautions before you proceed with the instructions below on how to update Joomla version:

  • Secure a backup of Joomla website files
  • Secure a backup of Joomla database SQL file
  • Check the system requirements of the new version and make sure that it is compatible to the current extensions of your Joomla website

Updating might sometimes be confused with upgrading a website’s version. Follow this link to see the difference between updating and upgrading CMS version

There are two ways to update your Drupal version:

Via Joomla Administration Page

This process is convenient if you are not logged in to cPanel. Follow the steps below on how to update the Joomla version inside the administration page.

  1. Access the Joomla administration page. The default link is http://yourdomain.com/administrator unless configured differently (replace the yourdomain.com with your website’s domain).
  2. Log in to your Joomla administration page. If you can’t remember the password, you can follow this link on how to reset your Joomla logins.
  3. Click the Update Now button.

  6. Check your Joomla’s extensions if there is a need in updating by going to Extensions > Manage Discover. If everything is set, it should say No Matching Results.

If there are extensions shown on the list, select the extension that is needed for your website and click the Install button that corresponds to the extension chosen.

Via Softaculous Apps Installer in cPanel

This is only applicable if your Joomla site is installed via Softaculous.

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Click the Softaculous Apps Installer icon found under Software menu.

  5. Tick the box next to Create Backup if you want a backup to be generated by cPanel. As shown below the box, this generates a full backup as the default. A full backup consists of both the website files and the database used by the website.
