How To Import Blogger Site to WordPress

Blogger is a template-based blog builder hosted by Google. Since Blogger is set up differently, it can only be hosted in Vodien by importing the Blogger site to a WordPress site. 

Here are the steps needed to complete the import: 

  1. Back up the content from Blogger.
  2. Install WordPress in your Vodien hosting.
  3. Import the Blogger backup to the installed WordPress site.
  4. Set up the redirection on your WordPress dashboard.
  5. Set up the redirection on your Blogger dashboard.
  6. Style your website.

 

1. Back up the content from Blogger.

  1. Login to your Blogger dashboard.
  2. In the left pane of the menu bar, click Settings.

  3. In the Manage Blog section, click Back up content.

  4. Click DOWNLOAD.

    The backup should be a .XML file as shown on the screenshot below.

2. Install WordPress in your Vodien hosting.

Install a new WordPress site to your hosting. Follow the applicable links provided below for each type of hosting.

 

3. Import the Blogger site to the newly installed WordPress site.

To import the Blogger site using a plugin in your WordPress dashboard, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
     
     
  2. In the left pane of the menu bar, click Plugins, and then click Add New.

  3. In Add Plugins, enter Blogger Importer Extended in the search box, and then press Enter on your keyboard.

  4. On Blogger Importer Extended, click Install Now, and then wait for the Installing icon to disappear.

  5. Now, click Activate.

  6. After the page redirects you to the list of installed plugins, click Run Importer on the Blogger Importer Extended section.

  7. Now, click Run Importer.

  8. Click 20 posts for free. If your Blogger site has more than 20 posts, you can avail their Unlimited license or use the basic Blogger Importer instead.

  9. On your Blogger dashboard, copy the blog ID on the URL as shown in the screenshot below.

  10. When you return to your WordPress dashboard, paste the blog ID in the box, then click Submit.

  11. Click the Start Import! button below your blog name.

  12. When the pop-up message appears, click OK.

  13. Once the import is successful, you can view a Success! message on the screen. Click remaining steps to complete the importing process.

4. Set up the redirection on your WordPress dashboard.

Redirect old Blogger links to your WordPress website to maintain SEO ranking.

  1. Click the Redirect old Blogger links toggle button to enable the redirection of the Blogger links to their respective pages and posts that were imported to the WordPress site.
  2. Click the Redirect 404s to homepage toggle button to enable the redirection of any broken links to the website’s homepage.
  3. In the lower section of the screen, click Save Changes.

5. Set up redirection on Blogger dashboard.

The redirection also needs to be set up on Blogger dashboard since this is where the site URLs originated. This prevents broken links and maintains your site’s SEO ranking.

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, click Download Template on the Blogger Importer Extended plugin.

  2. In the left pane of the menu bar, click Theme.

  3. Beside CUSTOMIZE, click the drop-down button, and then click Restore.

  4. When the Restore message appears, click UPLOAD.

  5. Select the template file downloaded from Step 5.1, and then click Open.

  6. Wait until the page shows Restored Theme. The theme should display as custom (Modified) since you uploaded a customized template. Click the drop-down button beside CUSTOMIZE, and then click Mobile Settings.

  7. In Theme > Choose Mobile Theme, select Desktop. This disallows the changing of the original Blogger links to the mobile links. This needs to be done to avoid broken links when the website is accessed on a mobile device. The mobile view of your website is now handled by your WordPress settings.

  8. Click SAVE.

6. Style your website.

Apply the desired theme, color, fonts, and widgets to your website as these are not carried over from Blogger. The drop-down options to modify these are under the Appearance menu in your WordPress dashboard.
